It is with deep regret that Phantom Events must announce the cancellation of the FRA World Championship event.
Despite a marketing campaign running into tens of thousands of pounds which has been the most prolific for any event (Robot Wars or otherwise), ticket sales for the event have fallen short of what is required to finance the event. Advice from all around was that ticket sales would pick up towards the event, however in reality they have fallen away. We left it until the last moment possible to take this action in the hope that tickets would pick up so that we didn’t make a premature decision, however it is clear that they have not and will not. We took steps to try to reduce costs for the event, however it simply isn’t possible to reconcile the difference with ticket sales and cost.
Events like this can only be funded by the general public putting their hand in their pocket and wanting to see the show. Despite a marketing campaign that peaked at 100 adverts per week on ‘Musicradio’, a newspaper campaign that hit over 1,000,000 people and promotion of the event at every live event that has taken place since February this year involving over 20,000 flyers - the public have simply chosen not to part with their money to see robots fight – or no longer wish to travel to see a single large event.
No-one wanted to see the event happen more than us, we were prepared to take a substantial loss on the event in order to put it on, however the losses that would now be incurred are simply too great even for us.
If there is anything that the roboteering community should take from this it is that in order for the ‘sport’ to survive, the community needs to re-invent itself. Events on this scale simply aren’t possible going forward, and rather than try to point fingers or assign blame, the community needs to pick itself up and find a way forward.
Roboteer registrations will be refunded back to teams over the next 30 days to team captains.
All teams will shortly receive a letter confirming this to them directly as well.
We tried everything, but in the end the public voted with their feet.

We werken eraan.

New Event Notice
